What is search engine marketing?

Search engine marketing is a necessary component to a well-rounded advertising campaign. It’s not meant to replace or compete with other popular forms of advertising; however, advertising on search engines – with the ability to serve users with exactly the information they are seeking – is an opportunity ripe with benefits for local businesses.

What's an advertisers conversion rate?
Conversion rates vary depending on the business you are in and the products and services you offer. However, you can control the biggest piece of the equation - your website. Compelling content with simple navigation is more likely to turn shoppers into buyers. Think like your customers, and provide the information that you think they would like to see.
What search engines are in your ad network?
Our technology distributes ads for our small business customers across a comprehensive online network and places them where consumers are searching, from Google and Yahoo! to wireless devices, online community forums, and popular blogs. Our ad network includes over 30 search engines including Yahoo!, Ask, MSN, AOL, LookSmart, Excite, iWon, Altavista, Infospace, WebCrawler, Dogpile, Earthlink, Netscape, About, Myspace, Local, ePilot, Cnet, and more.

How do you locally target ads?
We know that small business marketers want their ads to be seen by potential customers who are within reasonable proximity to their business. Advertising online allows for that and much more. Geographic-targeting (or geo-targeting) allows advertisers to display their ads to search engine users in predetermined geographic locations. For example, a business in St. Paul, Minnesota, may advertise nationally, statewide, or within a certain DMA (Designated Market Area). A searcher’s IP address reveals the searcher’s approximate location, and the search engine will display ads accordingly. This function prevents a searcher in Iowa, for example, from seeing an ad targeted for Minnesota. In addition, we use geographic-modifiers to allow consumers to find an ad for a business using geographic keywords to narrow their search to a specific location. Geo-modifiers can be names of cities, states, regions, towns, districts, or the names of common groupings of these areas. When a consumer searches Google using the keyword phrase, “Plumber leak detection,” they are likely to use a geographic-modifier such as “Dallas” to find only plumbers in the Dallas area. At WebVisible, we use all the relevant geographic keywords to best target customers to your business.
What are keywords?
Keywords and keyphrases are terms that consumers use to find what they’re looking for on the Web. Alternately, keywords are used differently by search engine marketers. Sponsored and contextual ads are created and assigned keywords and keyphrases plus geo-modifiers. When a consumer enters keywords “Plumber leak detection Dallas” for an plumber in Dallas, Texas, who specializes in leak detection, one or more of the keywords entered matched the keywords associated with the ads that appeared in the search results. In essence, the search engine served ads based on what the consumer searched for. Therein is the value of local search. WebVisible’s team of professional copywriters creates keywords based on the relevant content of an advertiser’s website, turning relevant products, services, and calls-to-action into keywords.
Can't I do this myself?
Yes, you can create ads and buy keywords directly from search engines. Google’s AdWords program is the most popular - second is Yahoo! Search Marketing - but there are nearly as many advertising programs as there are search engines. These programs require that the one managing the campaign has advanced knowledge of each search engine’s unique rules and procedures, their type of consumer users, and a firm grasp on navigating the campaign’s online management interface, not to mention a talent for ad copywriting and keyword selection. If you are thinking that this is a time-consuming process, you are absolutely right. Most small business owners are busy managing the store and simply do not have the time, which is why we’ve found our automated software approach to be a wise solution for busy marketers.
